In my personal experience, in studies. RATIONALISM, a student daily goes to school, listening to professors, copying assignments, reading books. EMPIRICISM, if a student will not give importance to studying its non sense, if students will not prioritize their studies than other activities, they will learn nothing.
My particular experience on RATIONALISM and EMPIRICISM was in my fourth year in high school. It was almost or senior's prom and every section must prepare a ballroom dance showdown. Our advisers asked me and some of my friends to teach my classmates to prepare for the showdown. It was then that I noticed that while I am teaching them how to dance using only my words like "move your feet to your left while letting your body wave as it follows your feet..". It was really difficult. They really need to see me do it first before they learned how to do it themselves. These made me realize that some people will learn better if they experienced it than if they just hear it.
LAXAMANA, JEFFERSON JAMES D. SECTION: F403 / COURSE: BSCE
RATIONALISM and EMPIRICISM are very essential in my learning especially in school, at home, and in life. Like what Immanuel Kant had proposed--that these two can go together, I believe that in life, in order for a person to grasp the whole truth about something, he must possess both. We know that pain is not a good feeling, but experiencing it by feeling it makes us more knowledgeable of the existing truth that it really does not feel good.
One example is that all our lives, we've been thought that there is God and that He is good and great, etc. But we can't really know that God is great, when we don't experience His greatness in our lives--that He is good when we don't experience His goodness.
I relate rationalism and empiricism with me through my experiences with learning how to drive. At first, I only knew driving through traffic signs and I thought that it was so easy because I know all the traffic rules. Then, there was my mother who is always scolding me because of my driving skills. She said that I am a "kaskasero". I told her that if she will keep on hindering me on practicing my driving skills, eventually I will not learn. After a while, when my siblings told our mother to let me practice driving, she told us "oo nga no, pano siya matututo kung di ko pagbibigyan magpractice". But, the negative side was I began to be the family driver and they told me, "makulit ka eh, yan tuloy. hahaha.".
Reasoning and Experiencing. Those are the two things involve when we say Rationalism and Empiricism.
I remembered this happening in my life, that was our midterm exam. I study my lessons, memorize those important terms so that it is easy for me to answer. Then I saw the test paper, at first I answered the questions without any doubt. And then I go the next page. There are question that I find it difficult at first because it is somewhat base on through experience. And luckily I have experience being on a construction site, I saw a lot of unfamiliar things, what are the rules and things to considered when on site, the roles of people on site and I learn from it. Finally, because of that experience I answered the questions,I apply what I've learn from that experience. And that was my experience about RATIONALISM and EMPIRICISM.
Rationalism(Thoeries) is the belief that the MIND is the best way of determining how things are. Empiricism(practical) is actually the same as tool of learning and deriving true natural understanding of something.
This way i'll trying to do example that RATIONALISM will work independently with Experience. Let say, timely, there is something like ghost or lost spirit being found in one particular place you known. Unfortunately some will insist you or me to be believe and sometimes they deceive you with their story and they're trying to rationalize it.
This is completely nonsense for me when I trying to check out my experience about this because I dont even see like such if in case this would be now an EXPERIENCE to me.
Gonzales, Kevin We use Empiricism and Rationalism on our daily lives, especially as a student, like practical exam and written exam. But I have this specific instance of my life when I use my Rationalism and Empiricism, It was last term when the final exam is approaching, our professor told us that our final exam will be diorama making, or to make a model of a building just like what we see at the mall. So our group decided to choose different kinds of models, and as a leader, I appointed to choose what will be our chosen model, but my group mates were choosing quite simple model, so I decided to research some interesting model and then I show it to the rest of the group, but they are against my design because they are telling me that it was very difficult to do. So I explain that we can do it because we are many and we have a lot of time in preparing that project, and I told them that if we can think, we can do, so they agreed. And the submission day came, so we brought our project to our classroom, and without expectations we actually became the first place and our project became part of the exhibit. My group mates and I were very glad. I’ve learned that for us long as we know the plan, the measurements, the dimensions, the designs (Rationalism) we will be able to make it in reality (Empiricism).
Everyone have experiences in their life. These experiences could be the incidents which was happened in someone else life or in our life. Some people learn lessons from their experiences and some experiences change the peoples life automatically. My best personal experience I have ever had in my life. During all of my primary and secondary school times, I seemed as if I were hiding behind a mask. When I was at home I was a totally different person. At school I was trying to be a person who could fit in, but the more I tried the more it didn’t seem to work. Everywhere I went I would sense what I said depending on my surroundings and the people that were with me. Most of the time I would not say anything at all because I was afraid of being embarrassed. I would always have to change my mode when different people were around me. I hated it. I was getting sick and tired of always being someone I was not. When i was at 4th yr high school that i realized that being two people was the worst thing that i could done to myself and that i did have other options.
My personal experience in Rationalism and Empiricism when I was in high school. I'm a varsity in basketball here in Caloocan then my coach told me to practice very well. Listening to my coach is very important but experience is the our buddy to our everyday life.
My personal experience of Empiricism and Rationalism: In my engineering surveying subject, we are required to do fieldworks wherein we need to measure the field/land by using an instrument called theodolite/transit. I already used and tried it in our elementary surveying and because of continuous practice it was easy for me to use it. But what makes it a bit hard is when we are given a problem and we need to solve it. Through experience we acquire knowledge and that experience is the best teacher.
One experience I remember that I used Rationalism and Empiricism, personally, is that when I was still in high school. Our physics teacher instructed us to make an investigatory project showing what we learned in Physics. The teacher assigned us with groups and a leader on each one. Eventually, my group mates and I were thinking of making a simple project so that it would be easy for us to finish and to explain its procedures. My group mates and I agreed of making a car made of cardboard, and wheels made up of bottle caps. The car should accelerate with the use of a rubber band. With that, it needs careful measurement and design to make sure the car would accelerate. We studied and researched a lot about our plan to make it work. Our first product kind of failed, and by that we were kind of getting tired and hopeless. We even thought of changing it, but I insisted of trying another one instead.

I have been experiencing both the rational and empirical knowledge in Physics 1.
In our physics lecture, our professor taught us how to calculate data and information provided in the problem via ballpen and a paper. Thus, we know how to perform such things using our brain or mind.
Then what we learned in our lecture, we perform them in the laboratory practically. This is to show us what we learned during our discussion and applying them in real life.
Same goes with other subjects with laboratory. The laboratories' purpose is for students to apply what they have learned in the lecture, and apply these lessons in their future lives. Thus, becoming empirical knowledge once the lessons are learned in the laboratory and by experience in performing such tasks.
My experience in Rationalism and Empiricism is when i was on Physical Ed 2 = Table Tennis. During the first lessons we just studied the basics(history, rules and techniques) at first i thought that playing Table tennis will be easy because you only need to hit the ball strong enough that your opponent will have little time to react. When we began to have actual matches i lost quickly because when i hit the ball too strong it goes outside. I realized that theories are not enough to excel.
As a student I am often to experience Rationalism and Empiricism. Usually I experience the rationalism and empiricism in my subjects, to understand the topics or lessons very well. When I was in high school in my English subject, every exam my teacher always put an essay writing at the last part of our test paper. Some of her questions needs a deep understanding to understand it, at that time, it is much better to understand more my answer if i am going to write the phrase that i have read and explain the phrase so that my answer in that essay would be good enough and in that essay, to understand more my answer I put an experience that i had. Also in my Chemistry subject when I was in High school there are some things that are not explained in lecture but you can learn in laboratory in experiments, so when the exam in chemistry lecture some cant answer with the teachings in lecture but it can answer based on the experiments that we have performed in laboratory.
I experienced RATIONALISM when I transferred here in Far Eastern University-East Asia College. I only knew little about this place. As I was in the process of transferring and submitting the requirements I always asked what should I do and where I should go next and gathered it all for references. Rationalism is like the learning process or stage . And I experienced EMPIRICISM when one of my former classmate in Mapua Institute of Technology, asked me "What papers/documents were needed in transferring in FEU-EAC?" I can use of my gathered reference in helping him in transferring. Empiricism is a lived experience.
My experience of Rationalism and Empiricism is when I was in high school our physics teacher tell us to make a documentary about the stars. Everyone in our contributed some ideas to make our documentary excellent. Based on our past experience in making a documentary our documentary turn out great and we got a high grade in the documentary.
All of us are experiencing rationalism and empiricism in our daily lives. And for me I am experiencing both in my CPE subject both lecture and laboratory. In my CPE lecture I don’t understand most of the lesson that my professor is teaching to us, but in CPE laboratory during the experiment that we are doing every meeting I learn something even though our professor only explain the procedure. Therefore I both need empiricism and rationalism in my life, where logical thinking and experiencing is the best way to learn.
I think I can relate experiences of rationalism and empiricism in doing this experiential paper or in any kind of paper involves writing comprehension. We should be able deliberately write down what really experience --->Empiricism you have rather than thinking ---> Rationalism it beyond it or just let yourself copy other experiences. Thus, you obligate to follow the instructions in order to have a good dependable paper. :3
sports is the best way to show the relationship of rationalism and emperialism. rationalism talks about theories, background of the game, rules. but you cant play without the skills. thats when emperialism comes in. skill set, drills, and more knowledge about the game. You cant play the game without skill and knowledge about the game. But what makes you great is having a skill and thinking how to play the game better. by the way, have you heard the saying: "life is a game"? hope you get what i mean
my experience is not only in school but also in my home. my mother never teach me how to cook food but i can do cook any kind of home dishes. because i want to learn how? i'll always watching and helping my mother in the kitchen and now i can. human are born intelligent the problem is they're not using there ability in the right direction or thing to do. in life we have a reason to quit but we don't have a reason to escape..the theory is your life, the skills is your personality..!
I experienced Rationalism when i find some things interesting, because i always look for facts in the internet or wherever i can look for it, example dictionary, and i experienced Empiricism when someone ask me about it that's where i can used my knowledge about something that i already researched about
In playing basketball you must know the basic terms, the background of it, the origin, rules and other theories about basketball. But I can't play basketball without skills and knowledge. Playing basketball is not about your personal skills and led the team by yourself, you must know how to pass the ball to your team mates and don't be greedy in the ball, you must share the with your team mates because when all of you were contributing in the team the percentage of winning that game is 100%. NBA says that when AMAZING HAPPENS. So WHEN TEAMWORK HAPPENS is our quotation when we win in a game.
It is also worth mentioning the entire field of mathematics (something Socrates and Plato liked to bring up in their rationalist view of the universe). There is no 'two' out in the world... just two OF different things. So it goes for pretty much every mathematical concept: straight lines, infinitestimal amounts, and postive and negatives. These are perfect ideas which are only approximated in the real world.
Empiricism and rationalism played a big role in my life. Not everything can be learned just by studying, hence, by actually experiencing them. But analyzing every thing before you do it could make a different effect on what the outcome would be. Like every time I would have problems with my family. It's like we're always arguing about the same thing all over again, and that way, I already know how to deal with them because I've been there, I got through it the first time it happened. (Empiricism) But thinking before you act would control the possibility of having negative effects of what you did. Like when me and my friends meet-up, I tend to think what time would I go home so does my family would never have to worry what happened to me. Because sometimes, I have the tendencies to over-think every thing that could happen if I would do something, including ignoring the things to do and not to do. (Rationalism)
These two words can be used in so many things these days. From what I understand, empiricism is gaining knowledge through experience and rationalism is gaining knowledge through studying the material. (no, I didn't wiki these two words)
Now this example, is one that every video game guy would actually relate. The famous fighting video 3d game Tekken, requires a lot of practice to really get good at it. Knowing all the moves and attacks and strategies is a good thing but without experience, you will not be able to win against the high tier players. Same could be said when you actually have experience playing with others at this game but do not have a good strategy nor do you have a good myriad knowledge of the moves and attacks. To get good at this game, knowledge and experience must coordinate with one another for the player to fully utilize his skills at this game.
Empiricism and rationalism play a major role in every person's lives. It is always the key step or the formula when it comes to learning. My particular experience or application of both is through the art of playing a musical instrument, particularly the guitar. Rationalism is applied when first study a guitar's background or history and all of its theories and techniques. You also need to familiarize yourself with Music and its theories as well. Empiricism comes when you apply all of the things you learned and practice it consistently.
When i play volleyball. i must learned the basic rules of volleyball. so i can be the best player of our school. but not all the time i depend of the rules but sometimes i must learned of my experience so i can improve my skills in my sport.thats what you called RATIONALISM and EMPIRICISM
My own experience of rationalism is when my coach in basketball starting to plan about our play in the team for the next game. He teach us his theories in our next team to be defeated. it become imperialism when we executed the plan and we won the game and share it to other teams. so that they can beat the team that we have defeated..
In my personal experience, in studies. RATIONALISM, a student daily goes to school, listening to professors, copying assignments, reading books. EMPIRICISM, if a student will not give importance to studying its non sense, if students will not prioritize their studies than other activities, they will learn nothing.

ReplyDeleteMy own experience of rationalism is when my coach in basketball starting to plan about our play in the team for the next game. He teach us his theories in our next team to be defeated. it become imperialism when we executed the plan and we won the game and share it to other teams. so that they can beat the team that we have defeated..
