BE STILL LIKE A MOUNTAIN, FLOW LIKE A GREAT RIVER.

for me Lao Tzu's quote "Be still like a mountain" suggests that you make a daily practise of meditation. Being quiet and finding a place inside of you where all the mind chatter finally leaves you so that there are only gaps of silence is the way to receiving all the answers to any question you ever needed. You'll never receive all the answers if you don't make room for them. You make room by being still. "Flow like a great river" refers to the art of living your life in the now. Don't dwell on the past, don't daydream about the future. Just live every moment in the NOW and experience the gift of peace that comes when you experience every moment fully and just flow with life rather than against it. Let life happen and experience it happening instead of always waiting for the next moment; the moment you dream will be better.

“BE STILL LIKE A MOUNTAIN, FLOW LIKE A GREAT RIVER” – Lao Tzu

A mountain is known to be unmovable, permanent, still, solid and sturdy.
A river endlessly flows in one direction. It doesn’t stop, not for a second.

‘Be still like a mountain, …’
Lao Tzu is telling us that we need to be firm and resilient. Whatever happens we should stay strong and stand firm. There will come a time when we need to make our own decision or choice, and when that day comes even if some people will not agree with what we choose, we need to stand by and fight for our decision.

‘…, flow like a great river’
River flows on and on, so keep moving forward. There are a lot of challenges in our life and there will be a moment that we’ll be facing failures, don’t let those failures hinder you in reaching your goals in life. Don’t be stuck in that phase, consider it as a test. All rivers flow into the sea, so realize that there is always something more out there.

I can relate two personal experiences from the quote by Lao Tzu…
The first one was back when I was still in grade school, making my own decision was hard. Every time I make a choice, I am easily influenced by other people’s opinion, which leads me to change my decision or choice so I can please them. Then I realized that I could never please everyone. So now, I make my decisions and choices to please myself. I learned to fight for my beliefs even if some people will disapprove.

The second one is about how I deal with failures before. I let those failures hinder me. I treat it like it was the end of the line. I let others speak such words toward me (like I am a failure or a loser) and I let myself believe what they say. I didn’t get over it and I was trapped in that mentality. I didn’t realize that I could be better and that failure is just temporary. I believe we need to experience failure for us to discover our strengths and reach our true potential. Failure is a test we need to get through to reach success.

We don’t need to focus on the things that will waste our time. We don’t need to dwell on the past nor be worried for tomorrow; we just need to focus on the things happening now. Face the present time because this is the only given time we can change things.

LET YOUR PAST SERVE AS A REMINDER, YOUR FUTURE BE SOMETHING TO LOOK FORWARD TO AND LET THE PRESENT BE A CHANCE TO LIVE YOUR LIFE TO THE FULLEST.

“BE STILL LIKE A MOUNTAIN, FLOW LIKE A GREAT RIVER” – Lao Tzu

For me, the quote of Lao tzu means that be still in life whatever happens. Life is a choice, no matter what you make or might do will fall for one reason. Be still like a mountain means be strong in life and don't let your emotions conquer you and think logically. If you fall down, get up and play the game of life. Flow like a river means be humble no matter what, don't forget to look back where you came from. Once you don't accept any new knowledge, there's the time arrogance will came in. Be humble, like an empty glass fill your mind with new knowledge for you to know and have edge in life and at the same time learn new things. Like the flowing of river, it just flows and keep moving forward so all things you've done in the past will just be a history on your life. Like what in the movie "Meet the Robinson" said, Keep Moving Forward.

“BE STILL LIKE A MOUNTAIN, FLOW LIKE A GREAT RIVER” – Lao Tzu

Mountains are known to be immovable, intangible behemoths, unaffected by any natural forces thrown at it.
Rivers are unwavering flows of water that only has one path, a path that would lead to an end.

Being still could mean not losing composure, being strong and unphased.
Flow could mean having to continue on and being able to move forward to reach your goal despite of distractions, detractions, discouragements & defeats.
Flow could also mean being able to adapt under any given circumstances.

I can compare this quotation to all the times that people would try to stop me from doing my plans, trying to pull and bring me down but I didn't let them distract and deter me. I moved forward, continued striving on reaching my goals.

“BE STILL LIKE A MOUNTAIN, FLOW LIKE A GREAT RIVER.”

There are instances in our life in which we are thrown into a sea of withering possibilities and with that, we are given the autonomy to choose how to react. Some end up ruining their lives in the process of looking for answers and some remained still and calm and was able to successfully surpass the storm.

In my life now, I can say that I have been very patient and still. Just like a mountain, I protect the ones I love and no matter how people try to take away my confidence in myself, I remain strong. My mom and I have some “trust issues” right now and although I cannot blame her for that because I admit that I have neglected my studies before, I am doing everything to gain her trust back. Although I must say that sometimes I find it hard to make them happy because no matter what I do they only see the bad things I’ve done, I don’t know where but I was able to muster up the courage and strength to keep going. There might be a lot of predicaments to come; good thing is I know that it is better to be still yet completely aware of what’s going on and know how to repair damages rather than being restless and end up accomplishing nothing. And with all of these things, I shall flow like a great river and follow my dreams. Do what it takes to be what I want without hurting myself and others. Just like a great river, I will flow into an endless dimension. Life will always be an unending withering of possibilities. But there will always be reparation for those gloomy days in the form of the enchantment we get from the decisions we make and the life we choose to live.

It happens always in school. Every time our prof told us to perform anything in front stage or in front of the class room by group, when the grouping is done some of my group mates still thinking an illegal(funny - you know what i'm saying) way, but it is almost our turn to perform in front. While my group mates still on a happiness mode, I realize that I always pause for a while, keeping myself in a silent mode, thinking what must be done and what is right. I can concentrate, i can think everything that we can do, there's an idea everywhere flowing into my mind! every idea that I made; I must tell it to my group mates with the help of them they have a suggestions so that we can do it right, and we can do it in front with courage.

“BE STILL LIKE A MOUNTAIN, FLOW LIKE A GREAT RIVER.”

My personal experience based on the quotation of Lao Tzu “BE STILL LIKE A MOUNTAIN, FLOW LIKE A GREAT RIVER” is when I'm at school and fighting the urge not to skip my classes or to cut classes. I realized that if i have a goal in my life, I should focus on the things that will help me to become successful. I should really stand for it and that explain "be still like a mountain" part. And for the "flow like a great river" part, my personal experience about that is life is not always focusing on the things that we need to be done, we must also enjoy our life. There was a time that I was reviewing my notes for the exam so i always fin an excuse to my friends not to hang out to them. I failed my exam because of over reviewing and i also lost my friends so i end up being lonely. From that day on I realize that social life is very important but we need also to consider things like our ambition.

Be still like a mountain, flow like a great river. – Lao Tzu

My personal experience of this quote was every time I’m with other people. There are times that I can’t avoid when I’m with people who have some bad manners and attitude. To avoid conflict or an argument regarding the way they act, I just ride with their so called jokes and even pranks. But I always make sure that I will not arrive to the point that I will personally participate in their bad deeds whether in small or big things. That situation, for me, usually happens in school especially in my recent college years. In my university, everyday, there’s a big possibility that I will encounter some people who have vices, bad attitude and habits. They could be my classmates, sort of friends or even just by standers around the campus. It’s not that bad to get to know each other. But as a responsible person, I personally set some boundaries that will protect me from bad influences and vices whenever I’m with other people.

"Be still like a mountain, flow like a great river."

A simple phrase but says a lot of meaning. My personal experience of this saying happened two years ago, when I and my GF broke-up, this defines the first phrase "Be still like a mountain.." even though it's so heartbreaking, I still acted up like there's nothing happened. I moved on through the pain and eventually forget her, the second phrase "..flow like a great river." Describes too the situation, after that happened, I said to myself that "LIFE GOES ON". I passed all my subjects and finished 1st year college in BSCE. No matter what happened, I put that problem aside and looked forward to my wonderful future to come.

“BE STILL LIKE A MOUNTAIN, FLOW LIKE A GREAT RIVER” – Lao Tzu

My personal experience in the quote when I was in my previous college institute, first year first term at the first day of the class I met different classmates that has good and bad habits, one of the positive influenced me by my classmate is to do our homework and go to library to study but on the negative side I learned to cut classes (NOT EVERYDAY HAHA!) play computer games and drink an alcoholic drink.

Sometimes we need to stand for what is right and sometimes we need to pretend that even wrong doing became right in order to maintain a grood friendship.

"Be still like a mountain and flow like a great river" - Lao Tzu

This quote tells us that we even though trials and challenges were given in our lives, we should be strong like a mountain. It also tells us that we should never give up. My personal experience about this quote was the time I failed my course on my first school. I really felt sad because i really want to be an engineer. But then, something inside me tells me that I should not give up. That's why I didn't. I am still taking up Civil Engineering and giving it an another shot. Flowing like a great river tells me that we should not be attached so much to things and sometimes we should learn to let go. It also means that we should sometimes go with the flow. My personal experience about this was I am sometimes not part of the decision making on my group of friends, because sometimes it feels good just following their decisions and i dont care what will happen next. :D I am just going with the flow. :D

"Be still like a mountain and flow like a great river" - Lao Tzu

People have different experiences that lead to change. One thing that remains constant in this world is change and we need to accept it. In every difficulty, you need to firm and strong. I was able to experience this when I was still in De La Salle University during my 3rd year. Problems started to come and it came in bunches and as pressure rose, I had a hard time catching up. Failure after failure in different subjects that seem very important for my future, piled up and I thought I should give up. I just thought about my family, friends and specially my future. I stood firm and decided to fight as long as I could. I faced all the problems without any hesitation amidst all the pressure. The second part of the quote flow like a great river reminded me of the feeling I had when I was kicked out of the school I have always dreamed of. I did not allow the pain discourage me, I fought back and just moved forward instead of just stayed in the past. I found a new school and did not waste any opportunity. I am now pursuing my dream of being a renowned engineer. I am currently continuing my course BS-ECE at FEU-EAC. Life goes on and we should not surrender since every new day is a new chance to change for the better and become the best we can be. Life is short therefore we should live it to the full without any regrets.
